Expert Recommends Effective Ways to Quickly and Safely Cool Down During Heatwaves
During intense heat, especially when it persists for several days, the risk of heatstroke increases. Adam Taylor, professor and director of the Clinical Anatomy Learning Centre at Lancaster University, shared strategies for rapidly and safely cooling down during hot weather.
Skin Cooling
Rubbing the skin with cold water effectively dissipates heat from the body. This method is suitable for elderly individuals or those with limited mobility.
Alternatively, taking a cool shower or bath can help. The water temperature should not be below +26 degrees Celsius, as icy water can cause cold shock.
Applying ice or cool compresses to the body is also effective; a damp towel or cloth works well.
Areas like the armpits, neck, forehead, wrists, and torso have many blood vessels close to the surface. Cooling these areas helps lower the body's internal temperature as cooled blood returns to vital organs.
Fans
Fans can improve sweat evaporation from the body, but they are not significantly effective in lowering body temperature. If the ambient temperature is below +33 degrees Celsius, using a fan can help cool the body. However, for higher temperatures, consider alternative methods.
Hot and Cold Beverages
Chilled beverages from the refrigerator better lower body temperature than ice or room temperature liquids.
Consuming hot beverages in hot weather activates the body's cooling mechanism. However, it leads to the removal of necessary fluids from the body, so opting for chilled drinks is likely best in this situation.
Ice Baths for Hands and Feet
This is one of the most effective methods for cooling the body at home.
These strategies provide practical ways to manage heat exposure and prevent heat-related illnesses during extreme temperatures.
