What to Pack for an Island Vacation

Island vacations offer a unique kind of enjoyment. The stunning island landscapes, vibrant colors, and endless beaches are perfect for relaxation, inspiration, and a mental reset. It’s almost impossible not to be satisfied with this type of getaway, unless you are a fan of bustling cities and concrete jungles.

Many travel agencies offer package deals to islands, often including everything you need, so travelers typically only need to bring personal items and a basic first aid kit. However, if you forget something, you can usually buy it on-site, though it might be more expensive. Islands are rarely cheap destinations, so bringing essentials with you is practical.

The Essentials for an Island Trip

This rule doesn’t apply to food or heavy items, especially if your transfer involves a seaplane, which has strict weight limits for luggage. For example, suitcases over 30 kg are often not allowed on board. Check the luggage requirements of local carriers and transportation companies and pack accordingly.

If you are visiting tropical islands outside the tourist season, be prepared for unusual weather. Prices for accommodations and activities often drop significantly after the season, but the islands might experience heavy rains or cyclones. Consider this, especially for longer stays.

Snorkeling or Diving Gear

Masks, snorkels, and fins can be bulky, taking up precious suitcase space. While many hotels offer rental gear, it’s more hygienic to use your own mask and snorkel. Plus, hotel rentals can cost around $8-10 per item per day, adding up to significant extra expenses.

Sunscreens and Repellents

Don’t underestimate the different climate. Heat, tropical insects, and intense sun can negatively impact your skin and overall health. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent to protect yourself and ensure a pleasant vacation.

Clothing

Choose lightweight, natural fabrics to stay comfortable in the hot climate. However, be mindful of local customs, especially on islands like the Maldives, where certain clothing restrictions may apply. Some hotels may prohibit wearing shorts or swimsuits in dining areas. Research the dress code in advance.

Swimsuits

While everyone brings a swimsuit for a beach vacation, if you plan to engage in activities like diving or surfing, pack both a bikini or regular swimsuit and more practical sportswear. Don’t forget a rash guard or surf suit to avoid sunburn.

Electronics

Gadgets are a must. Despite wanting to disconnect, the breathtaking island scenery will tempt you to capture memories. Bring a camera with the necessary lenses and batteries. Also, pack adapters, headphones, and portable chargers to stay connected. If you have a drone, check the hotel and country regulations regarding aerial photography. Many tourist spots and hotels ban drones to protect guests' privacy, and some countries might even confiscate drones at customs. Violations can result in hefty fines or even arrest.

What to Pack for Kids on an Island Vacation

When traveling with children, pack personal items and hygiene products, and consider bringing baby food or find out where you can buy the necessary brands or equivalents on the islands. Diapers are often very expensive and hard to find at resort shops, so allocate space for them in your luggage.
